CHARLIE'S GREATEST HITS
Author's Note: Charlie's Greatest Hits was my first earnest attempt at open format and scratching (baby scratching, but I had to start somewhere). The title was inspired by the Lost character Charlie Pace, a musician who, in season three, entered a reflective state and penned the top five "greatest hits" of his life on a piece of paper. For the sound of the mix I wanted a compilation of songs that projected a kind of grainy authenticity. There's a couple of "polished" moments in the tracklist but they're surrounded by an indie vibe that acts as the foundation. Charlie's Greatest Hits also marks the first time I collaborated with another artist: West Coast undergrounder Anacron, who lent the beloved "A Prototype" to the Tony Hawk's Underground soundtrack, reached out to me on social media after I tweeted about that very track. I told him about the new mix I was working on and he sent me "Proverbial Slap," featuring DJ Daze, before it was even released. Luckily, I was able to organically place it in the mix.
